What was the last thing you made from scratch?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 19, 2007:

Beef Stew.  I got a late start and we didn't eat until 8 that night.  When I was married, my family ate together nearly every night.  I usually would cook.   For sixteen years, that was the routine.  After my divorce, my interest in cooking evaporated.  When I have my kids, we still have meals together but  I have been buying a lot of take out.  This past Wednesday, I made the stew and changed the recipe slightly.  Its not really that much of a recipe, rather simple.  Brown stew meat in oil.  Add four cups of water and lipton cup of soup mix.  Simmer one hour.  Add carrots simmer 15 minutes.  Add potatos and an onion and cook for another half an hour. Add butter/flour mixture to thicken .  Worchestershire sauce, salt and pepper.   This time, I added the butter and flour mixture right after the potatos and let it cook nearly the full half hour.  Cooking is a labor of love.  The slow rise of anticipation in the family as the smells drift through the house.  Is it ready?  Is it ready?  Set the table.  Get out the place mats and napkins.  Pour the milk.  It's ready....can you pass the rolls.

Thanks Farland.  I'll bring you some when I visit my cousin in Utah.

Donny, Do you still have those Bantam Roosters?

As a matter of fact, I do.  But since they ate my stash, three have been spouting poetry nonstop, one has learned to play guitar, and the others have been sitting on the chaise lounge involved in a deep discussion of the fundamental nature of space, time and true love.  I wouldn't dream of having them for dinner.  They'd bore us silly.

They sound more entertaining then my frog and cat.  The only thing the frog has mastered is eating all the fish in the tank … that was kind of entertaining, until my daughter started crying.    The cat … well he's not much for deep conversation and he doesn't  play any instrument, but he did run across the piano the other day.  I'm disappointed, though, the idea of a thanksgiving equivilent of a hashish brownie had me parched.   Guess I'll stick with my original plans.

Andy, I'm pretty sure the thanksgiving equivalent has to do with the stuffing…mmm, nice herbalicious stuffing. Maybe with mushrooms too.

I think you're right.  Seeing that  Donny's roosters ate his stash …. hmmm.  I wonder if there any good at field dogging mushrooms.

You just took me back to the family kitchen table growing up. Beef stew was a regular on our dinner menu and my mom's beef stew sounds identical (ingredients) to the one you made with your family. I can smell the aromas coming from the kitchen and feel the hungry anticipation as I type right now. Although I think I may have cultivated a tad more patience than I had when I was a youngster ; )

I just got back from the market and am about to make soup with the turkey leftovers. Lots of fresh veggies and beans to add to the turkey & stock. Yum!

I think it was the Better Homes and Garden Cook Book that must have been a sure-fire wedding gift back when.  Comfort foods.  Its probably the same recipe.    Your turkey soup sounds tasty.   Fortunately, I just finished a bowl of Chicken Curry.  I'm too full to suffer from the feel of hungry anticipation but I have been struck with that feeling in the past  drooling over the pot of paella that you posted!
