What is the role of media?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 14, 2007:

Air Pudding

"The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassinations from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment." Robert Maynard Hutchins (1899-1977)

An informed public is the cornerstone of democracy. However, the mainstream media is more concerned with viewership than their stewardship.   There are plenty of news programs but its more a question of what is news.  The competition for the public's attention has led to sensationalism and meaningless coverage, impacted the quality of candidates running for public office, and started us down the road of indifference and apathy.

What should the media do?  Do their job.  Report what SHOULD be reported.

Very well stated… you took the words right out of my mouth!  I agree.  Somehow viewship has become more important than anything else… it's not the quality of what is reported, it's what will draw the most numbers.  Most of the time it's meaningless BS!  I'm so tired of what the media thinks is important, because it really is just crap.

no, Andy, the role of the media is to promote whatever crap the right-wing thinktanks want Americans to believe.  If they fail to do that they are guilty of “liberal bias”.

Right wing, left wing….they're all spinning it.   The media is allowing it because they find it more important to report whether or not Paris Hilton was wearing underwear with her county wear.  When it comes time to cover real issues, they focus on …. the French President's divorce…or wait this just in “The B Word used a McCain Event”
